What it really costs to repair an appliance: the spare part prices

The official BSH spare parts list is public and holds 875 part numbers with a price next to each one. The components that fail first are under 20 euros, while the control board is worth 60 per cent of a new tumble dryer. Here is the maths to decide between repairing and replacing.

Your tumble dryer breaks down, you call the service line and the answer is always the same: you are better off buying a new one. You have no idea what the part actually costs, so you say yes. The thing is, that price is written down in a public document you can download in one click, and almost nobody opens it.

We at PortosEunostos opened it and lined up all 875 entries inside. What comes out is worth knowing before the phone call, not after: the parts that fail first cost less than a pizza, while one single component is worth nearly two thirds of a brand new dryer.

The price list exists and it is public

Since 2023 the European ecodesign regulation for tumble dryers, Reg. (EU) 2023/2533, requires manufacturers to publish indicative spare part prices. BSH, the group behind Bosch and Siemens, does it with a PDF open to everyone: bsh.group/Spare_part_prices, updated to 30 June 2025.

Inside there are 875 part numbers with a price next to each one. Two warnings the document states itself: these are pre-tax prices, so on the invoice you add 22 per cent VAT, and they do not include labour, which no manufacturer publishes. The final prices including tax sit on the service page of each individual model.

The parts that actually fail cost a few euros

Leave the electronics out for a moment. That leaves 227 entries: springs, seals, filters, pumps, belts, sensors, handles. The median is 13.67 euros. One hundred and fifty-nine of those 227 entries are under 20 euros and only sixteen go above 50.

Here are the components that give up first in a tumble dryer, with the list price and what you actually see on the invoice with 22 per cent VAT.

Spare partPre-tax listWith 22% VAT
Spring4.46 euros5.44 euros
Lint filter6.19 euros7.55 euros
Drive belt16.55 euros20.19 euros
Condensate pump66.88 euros81.59 euros
Condensate tank92.64 euros113.02 euros
Motor178.91 euros218.27 euros
Power module226.30 euros276.09 euros

The lint filter deserves its own line: 6.19 euros for the part that, if you never clean it, stretches your cycles and makes the machine work for nothing. We at PortosEunostos keep saying it, and we explained how often it really needs doing in our guide to the dryer filter, condenser and tank.

Then there is the electronics

This is where the list changes character. Of the 875 entries, 648 are circuit boards: 74.1 per cent of the whole document. Their median is 115.12 euros pre-tax, which is 140.45 euros with VAT. The most expensive one, a programmed power module, costs 226.30 euros pre-tax, 276.09 euros on the invoice, and labour has not even entered the calculation yet.

Put that next to the price of a machine and it lands differently. The cheapest dryer in the OpportunityCommerce catalogue on 11 October 2026 is a Hisense heat pump model at 457.00 euros. The power board alone is worth 60.4 per cent of that new machine.

This, and not the quality of the materials, is the reason you will be told a repair is not worth it. It helps to know it in advance: we looked at the same subject from the regulatory side when the repairability class arrived on the energy label.

Repair or replace: the maths in three lines

Let us do it properly, with our own numbers. Between a class E dryer and a class C one there are 67.1 kWh a year over 156 cycles. At the ARERA tariff for the fourth quarter of 2026, 0.4343 euros per kWh, that is 29.14 euros a year of difference on the bill (we redid every calculation with the new tariff in our piece on what it costs to run your appliances).

Now compare. If the fault is the board, you spend 276.09 euros plus labour and keep the old machine; a new, more efficient one costs 457.00 and saves you 29.14 euros a year. The 181 euro gap is recovered in 6.2 years: it is a draw, and the decision comes down to the age of the machine, not to the saving.

If instead the pump, the belt or the filter has failed, you are looking at 7 to 82 euros of parts. There is no contest there: you repair, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you an appliance.

How many years you can still find the part

The classic worry is buying a machine that cannot be repaired six years from now. Since 29 August 2023 BSH guarantees spare parts for large appliances for 15 years instead of 10, for units produced after 1 January 2023, with 350,000 part numbers in stock. In the same document the European Commission puts the average life of a large appliance between 12 and 16 years. In short: spare part coverage now reaches the end of the machine's life.

PortosEunostos tips

  • Ask for the part number, not for a quote. With the eight digit code you look the price up in the list or on the official spare parts page and you immediately see how much of the invoice is labour.

  • Always split part and labour. A flat 200 euro quote can hide a 20 euro component.

  • Under 100 euros of parts, repair. Above 200, weigh the age: if the machine is more than eight years old, the second fault arrives before you break even.

  • If you buy, look at the class before the brand. A class C model earns back more on the bill than the price gap costs, as we saw analysing the Bosch WQB245B0IT.

  • Check the seller, not only the price. Shipping, delivery times, returns and warranty terms are worth as much as the discount.

In two lines

Most spare parts for a tumble dryer cost less than 20 euros, the electronics costs as much as half a new machine, and the difference between the two situations comes down to a single question: which part failed. Ask it before you authorise any work.

If the numbers say replace, compare real prices on SniffaPrezzi and look at the OpportunityCommerce catalogue, where heat pump dryers start at 457 euros. If they say repair, you now have the number in hand to say so.
