How to clean your microwave without ruining it

Cleaning a microwave is not about looks: the manual puts it under a safety warning. We compared the Bosch manual with the support pages of the same manufacturer, and on the household remedies the two sources contradict each other.

A microwave gets dirty every time you switch it on, and almost nobody cleans it every time they switch it on. Then one day the splashes are dry and welded to the walls, you grab the roughest sponge in the sink and you start scrubbing. That is the quickest way to ruin it.

We at PortosEunostos went and read the instruction manual of a Bosch built-in microwave, and then the support pages of the same manufacturer. Two things surprised us. First: cleaning here is not about looks, it sits inside a safety warning. Second: on the two household remedies the internet repeats most often, vinegar and lemon, the two Bosch sources openly contradict each other.

Cleaning a microwave is about the seal

In the manual, cleaning appears under a heading that leaves no room for interpretation: «Risk of serious harm to health». The text says that poor cleaning «can damage the surfaces of the appliance, shorten its service life and lead to dangerous situations, such as microwave energy escaping». And it names three points to keep clean at all times: the cooking compartment, the door and the hinge.

That is what sets a microwave apart from every other kitchen appliance. The door is not a door, it is the wall of a cage that has to keep the waves inside, and the hinge is what keeps it square. The same manual adds that the appliance must not be switched on if the door or its plastic frame are damaged, and it bans abrasive cleaners and metal scrapers on the door glass, because scratched glass can break.

In plain terms: the green scouring pad on the door is not a cosmetic risk. A scratch that turns into a crack puts the appliance out of service, and repairing the door is a job for customer service, not for you.

Every surface has its own rule, and they are not the same

The chapter «Cleaning and servicing» does not give one single method. It gives six different instructions for six different parts, and the most counter-intuitive case is this one: glass cleaner is required on the door panels and banned on the front of the appliance. Two surfaces twenty centimetres apart, two opposite rules.

PartWhat to useWhat to avoid
Cooking compartmentHot soapy water; on stubborn dirt an oven cleaner, only when the compartment is coldOven spray, aggressive or abrasive oven cleaners
TurntableTake it out and wash it in hot soapy water, or in the dishwasherThe abrasive side of sponges
Door panelsDamp sponge cloth and glass cleanerGlass scrapers, abrasives, metal scrapers
Stainless steel frontHot soapy water, then a thin film of stainless steel cleanerGlass cleaner, glass or metal scrapers
Control panelA barely damp microfibre cloth, then dry itWater in any quantity: it must never be wetted
Rack and accessoriesHot soapy water, dishwasher; on stubborn dirt even steel woolNothing specific, this is the one part where abrasives are allowed

Four general bans apply on top of all that: no steam cleaners or pressure washers, because moisture getting in can cause an electric shock; no aggressive or abrasive cleaners; no products with a high alcohol content; no hard sponges. The Bosch website adds one the manual never mentions: no chlorine-based products, because chlorine corrodes stainless steel.

Vinegar and lemon: the manual says yes, the website says no

The manual, in the paragraph on cleaning the cooking compartment, says to clean «with hot soapy water or water and vinegar». And for odours it suggests heating a cup of water with a couple of drops of lemon juice for 1 to 2 minutes at maximum microwave power, always placing a spoon in the cup to prevent delayed boiling.

The support pages of the same manufacturer say the opposite, and they say it bluntly. On vinegar: «We advise against cleaning your microwave oven with vinegar or vinegar essence. It is too aggressive a product and not suitable for cleaning a microwave oven». On lemon: «We advise against cleaning the microwave oven with lemon juice». The procedure they recommend is the same on both pages, more tedious and safer: take the turntable out and wash it in soapy water, wipe the inside with a damp cloth.

Faced with two documents from the same manufacturer that contradict each other, we follow the more cautious one. Hot water and washing-up liquid work, they are not acids, and they will not start an argument with customer service the day you need the warranty.

The function that softens the dirt, and what it costs

The manual includes a dedicated procedure, called cleaning aid, which is the honest alternative to scrubbing. A few drops of washing-up liquid in a cup of water, a spoon in the cup to prevent delayed boiling, the cup in the middle of the compartment, power set to 600 W, time set to 3 minutes. When the cycle ends you leave the door closed for another 3 minutes, then wipe with a soft cloth and let it dry with the door open. The steam lifts the dirt for you.

What does running it cost? On a built-in microwave rated at 800 W of output power and 1,270 W of input power, 600 W of output is worth about 950 W drawn from the socket. Three minutes make 0.048 kWh, that is roughly 2 cents at the ARERA reference price of 0.4343 euros per kWh in force since 1 October 2026. Once a week for a year costs 1.08 euros. It is our own estimate and we state it as such: it comes from the ratio between declared input and output power, not from a laboratory measurement.

For odours, the Bosch website says instead to let the soapy water work «without switching the appliance on». Both approaches work. The only difference is whether you are prepared to spend two cents to wait six minutes instead of twenty.

The mistakes that really cost you

  • The abrasive sponge on the door. It is the one mistake that can put the appliance out of service: scratched glass breaks, and a microwave with a damaged door must not be switched on.

  • Oven spray inside the compartment. The manual bans it. An oven cleaner is allowed only on stubborn dirt and only when the compartment is cold.

  • A wet control panel. «Never wet the control panel»: barely damp microfibre, then dry at once.

  • Waiting. On stainless steel, limescale, grease, starch and egg white must come off immediately or they leave corrosion spots. Here time does more damage than the cleaner.

  • Forgetting the hinge. It is one of the three points the manual asks you to keep clean at all times, and the only one nobody ever looks at.

PortosEunostos tips

What to check on the product. The turntable should be removable and dishwasher safe, otherwise every clean becomes precision work inside the compartment. Look at what the interior is made of: stainless steel cleans up better than enamel but shows more if you use the wrong product. If you are buying used or refurbished, inspect the door, the glass and the plastic frame first: it is the one fault that makes the appliance unusable and that you cannot fix yourself.

How to judge the seller. Ask for real return and service times, because the door glass is the fragile part and transport damage shows up straight away. Check that the seller states spare parts availability, turntable and door above all, and that shipping is insured: on a 17 kg appliance with a glass wall that is not a detail.

The Portos verdict

The short rule is one line: hot water and washing-up liquid on everything, a soft cloth, no abrasives, never wet the control panel, and glass cleaner only on the door panels. Two minutes after use are worth half an hour of work two months later, and they keep clean the three points that actually matter: compartment, door and hinge.

If the door of your microwave is already marked or the hinge has play, this is no longer maintenance and the conversation changes. You can see real models and prices in the microwave ovens category on OpportunityCommerce, which showed twenty-four products on the shelf when we checked, and compare offers on SniffaPrezzi, which counted 961 for the same search.

Frequently Asked Questions
