Bosch BEL523MS0: analysis, quartz grill and who it suits

The 25.5 centimetre turntable is the real ceiling of this built-in microwave, more than the declared volume. And the quartz grill, which combines with the microwaves at 180 and 360 W, costs 7.62 euros more than the twin model without it.

A built-in microwave with a grill at 325.82 euros looks like the easy choice, and to a large extent it is. The real question is not whether the grill is there, but what you can do with it: can you run it together with the microwaves or not? The Bosch BEL523MS0 data sheet spells the answer out. The product page published by the same manufacturer says the opposite.

At PortosEunostos we compared this model's sheet with those of five other built-in Bosch units in the same catalogue, with prices checked on 3 November 2026. What comes out is an honest appliance, with a space limit nobody mentions in the shop and with an extra function that costs seven euros and sixty-two cents.

The sheet at a glance

  • Product: Bosch BEL523MS0, Series 4, built-in microwave with grill, stainless steel

  • Cavity: 20 litres declared, compartment 201 x 308 x 282 mm, 25.5 cm glass turntable

  • Power: 800 W output across five levels (90, 180, 360, 600, 800), 1,270 W drawn, 10 amps

  • Grill: quartz, 1,000 W, combinable with the microwaves at 180 and 360 W

  • Dimensions: 382 x 594 x 317 mm, niche 560 to 568 wide, 362 to 365 high, 300 deep

  • Programmes: eight automatic ones (four defrost, three cooking, one combined) plus one storable custom programme

  • Price and check date: 325.82 euros, in stock, 3 November 2026

The grill costs seven euros and sixty-two cents

The same catalogue carries the BFL524MS0: stainless steel like this one, the same 20 litre cavity, the same 201 x 308 x 282 compartment, the same 25.5 cm turntable, the same 800 W output and 1,270 W drawn, the same installation dimensions. The one substantial difference is that it has no grill, and it costs 318.20 euros.

Between a model with the grill and one without it, in this price band, there are therefore 7.62 euros, one kilo of weight (17.3 against 16.5 kg), a wire rack in the box and one extra automatic programme, eight against seven. It is a rare case where a whole function costs less than an accessory at the till: between the two, the one with the grill is worth it even if you think you will never use it.

Microwaves and grill together: you can, but at 180 and 360 W

The data sheet, second page, says two precise things: «Microwave and grill power 180 W, 360 W; combinable» and «Microwave and grill usable alone and in combination». Among the eight automatic programmes it lists one dedicated to the combined function.

The specification table published on the Bosch product page for the same model instead states, under «Cooking methods combinable with the microwave function», a flat «Not available». The same goes for all seven other Bosch microwaves we read, including the Series 8 at almost a thousand euros. Two documents from the same manufacturer, two opposite answers: we trust the data sheet, which is the detailed document and the only one of the two that counts the programmes.

It matters because the combination is what separates a microwave with a grill from a plain microwave: browning while you heat, instead of heating and then browning. The limit to keep in mind is that in combined mode the microwave share stops at 360 W, less than half of the 800 available on their own. It is slow cooking, good for browning one portion, not a shortcut to go faster.

Twenty litres declared, 25.5 centimetres that turn

The number that decides what fits is not the volume, it is the diameter of the turntable: 25.5 cm of glass inside a cavity 30.8 cm wide. Anything wider than those 25.5 cm rests on the edges and does not rotate, and in a turntable microwave that movement is part of how the heat is spread.

The comparison inside the catalogue makes it clear: on the BEL554MB0 the turntable grows to 31.5 cm and the cavity to 25 litres. Those six centimetres separate «one plate at a time» from «a baking dish fits». On the volume, the general warning from our guide to microwave ovens applies: the 20 declared litres are not the product of the three compartment measurements, which works out at 17.5.

Measure the cabinet before you buy

The appliance is 382 mm high and the niche opening runs from 362 to 365: the difference is the frame that rests on the cabinet, not a mistake. In depth it works the other way round, 317 mm against the 300 of the niche. The cable is 130 cm long with a Schuko plug and needs a 10 amp socket within that distance. Installation is allowed both in a wall unit and in a tall unit, and the door is side hinged on the left, so it opens leftwards.

One reading note: on the sheet the niche measurements are labelled as height by width by depth, but 560-568 is the width and 362-365 the height, as the product page confirms field by field. Trust the numbers, not the labels: it is the same problem we described about niche, body and packaging measurements on built-in appliances.

Strengths and limits

  • 1,000 W quartz grill with combined mode, 7.62 euros away from the model without it.

  • A storable custom programme, which the two Series 8 units at 766.87 and 794.31 euros do not have.

  • Retractable knobs and an LED display, with no menu to learn.

  • Installation dimensions identical to its 20 litre siblings: the cabinet does not change if you replace it one day.

  • A 25.5 cm turntable: that is the real ceiling on what you can put inside.

  • 800 W declared as the maximum, but the footnote warns that on long cooking it drops to 600.

  • In combined mode the microwaves stop at 360 W, so times get longer.

  • No connectivity and no humidity sensor: the cooking is up to you.

Who it suits and who it does not

It makes sense to buy it if you are fitting out a 60 cm tall unit and you need the microwave to heat, defrost and occasionally brown, on a budget under 350 euros. It is suited above all to people cooking for one or two who already have a conventional oven.

More appropriate alternatives exist if you routinely heat baking trays or serving dishes, because 25.5 cm of turntable is not much, or if you want the microwave to double as an oven: there is no hot air here, and the sheet does not declare it on any of the eight models we read.

The interesting step is the second one: 125.32 euros more buy five litres, six centimetres of turntable, 100 W of output and 200 W of grill. The third, from 451.14 to 794.31 euros, buys a touch display and ten programmes, but takes away the turntable, replaced by a glass floor with a rack and a glass dish in the box.

PortosEunostos advice

  • On the product: measure the niche before choosing the model, look at the turntable diameter and not only at the litres, check that the socket sits within 130 cm and that the door opening side works in your kitchen.

  • On the seller: ask for real delivery times, return conditions and who handles the fitting. On a built-in appliance a badly handled return costs more than the discount you got.

  • On the price: this band moves little, but between two shops the gap on an identical model can be worth as much as the grill.

Price, availability and the Portos assessment

From the analysis of the specifications the BEL523MS0 is a microwave well calibrated to its price: it does not promise to be an oven, and what it declares it declares in full. Its limit is physical and it is called a 25.5 cm turntable. Its merit is that the grill, combined mode included, comes home with you for 7.62 euros.

Before deciding it is worth comparing prices and availability on SniffaPrezzi, where built-in microwaves with a grill number around sixty. If the model is already the right one, you can check features and availability on OpportunityCommerce, which on 3 November 2026 listed it in stock at 325.82 euros.
